Lausanne Ranks Second at the FIBA Huai'an Challenger 2019

Updated: Jul 23, 2019

Team Lausanne had the chance to compete at the Huai’an Challenger 2019 due to their successful crowdfunding campaign that awarded them a Wild Card from the FIBA. After the pool draw, Lausanne was seeded 6th and therefore landed in Pool C with NY Harlem and Belgrade, two teams from the top 25 in the World.

The first game of that pool was between NY Harlem and Lausanne and after a great start, especially from Marco Lehmann, Lausanne took a comfortable lead. Due to some lack of concentration of Lausanne, NY Harlem fought back in the game, especially with their strong rebounding game under the basket. However, at the end Lausanne was able to advance again by hitting some important shots from behind the arc from Gilles Martin and Westher Molteni and finished the game 20:18.

The second game of the pool for Team Lausanne was against the strong Serbian team of Belgrade. That game was very physical resulting in a very low scoring game 14-11 for Lausanne. The score was quite tied during the whole game and the great work from Natan Jurkovitz and Westher Molteni down the basket helped Team Lausanne to get the W and to qualify for the ¼ finals.

In ¼ finals, the Swiss Team was facing a solid team of Ulaanbaatar. The game was nearly even during the whole 10 minutes. Thus, a huge Marco Lehmann in offense, with 5 two pointers gave a great competitive edge for Team Lausanne. Ulaanbaatar offered a physical game and used very well their size advantage. However, with a collective defense, Lausanne came up with the win in the last minutes.

Team Lausanne was then facing the national team of China, represented by the city of Beijing. That team did a terrific job of eliminating the Team from Gagarin in ¼ finals. They were carried since ¼ finals by the Chinese crowd as they were the only team representing China in the last 8. The experience of 3x3 and the habits of playing physical game has helped Team Lausanne throughout the whole game. The ball movement of the Swiss team and the collective offense give them an easy semi- final win 21-12 and secured a ticket for 3x3 WT Master in Montreal on the 7th and 8th of September 2019.

Harlem… again…. Team Lausanne had to play another round against Team Harlem but this time for a Challenger final. The lack of focus and communication did not help the Swiss Team who started with a 2-9 in the first 3 minutes. Then, the “remontada” started, to reach in the middle of the game a 12-12 in the scoring. The last battle was a tough one and Antoine Morgano did not help Team Lausanne, scoring two consecutives contested two pointers. And after a very clutch basket from Marco Lehmann to reach 19-20, the American team set the deal with a tip in to get the W, 21-19.

It is the second time of the year that Team Lausanne has reached a final at a Challenger, thus it qualifies them for the WT Masters edition in Montreal - the second Masters edition by qualification for Lausanne 3x3 in their career. We are looking forward to seeing the rest of the season and we would like to thank everyone for the support.
