After two consecutive years, the 3x3 national team did not validate its ticket for the EuroCup 2019. In 2017 and 2018, the country was represented by both a women and a men team, but this will not be the case this year.
The pool lottery due to the national seeding gave Switzerland a spot in the toughest pool of the qualifier. Certainly in the top 3 teams at that event, Switzerland had the challenge to face the bronze medalist of the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup in the same group.
The first game was well managed by the team from the start until the end of the game, finishing with an easy win 18-6 against North Macedonia. The team directly knew they would have to beat the polish bronze medalist for a spot at the Euro Cup 2019. After winning the toss, Switzerland decided to start with the ball and from the start of the game everything was under control. The game plan has been respected during the whole game and the defensive performance against the star player, Mike “Money in the bank” Hicks was terrific. Unfortunately for Switzerland, receiving two 2 points in a row in the last two minutes gave them hard times to come back. At the end, a critical call from the referees when the score was 17-16 for Poland set the deal. It awarded them two free throws and the ball.
Even though that game was potentially a win or go home for Switzerland, they gave a great team effort and a solid performance against the greek squad in the third pool game. Finishing with a good shooting performance, the swiss won 22-12 and kept a very small chance to believe in a win from North Macedonia over Poland. However, the polish team smashed the North Macedonian and stepped in the final bracket with Latvia and Italy.
Latvia and Poland qualified then easily for the Euro Cup 2019 in Hungary. We are not afraid to say that Switzerland was in the top 3 teams at the event and we are looking forward to the next tournaments.
